The Ghana Police Service has justified plans by the service to arm personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

According to the Police service the latest trend of criminals targeting and killing unarmed Policemen has forced them to adopt these measures.

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanum to provide firearms and other protective gadgets to personnel of the MTTD and any policeman on duty.

This directive is necessitated by last Wednesday’s dastardly act by some criminals shooting and killing two policemen at Gomoa Budumburam while on motor traffic duties, the latest is the fifth police killings in the last month.

Speaking about this directive, the director general of the police public affairs directorate, ACP David Eklu says that some discussions must go on about the modalities of its implementation.

“What this means is that the IGP will have to sit down with the Police management board, the director general in charge of Motor traffic unit, they will have to sit down and look at the modalities and that will come in the cause of time” he emphasized.
