A 25-year-old man, Divine Akuinor, was on Saturday, January 5, 2019, allegedly shot dead by a police patrol team.

The incident occurred between 1 am. and 1.30 a.m. at Malik-Adjorman, a suburb of Teshie in Accra.

According to an eye witness identified only as Gabby, the deceased was shot together with a mechanic, Dennis Kojo, by the police, who visited the area following the snatching of a lady's handbag by unknown persons.

Gabby explained that he was searched by the police after they asked the victim of the bag snatching whether he was the one who snatched her bag.

Explaining further, Gabby said the team heard a motorbike coming around the corner, so, they quickly drove there and shot at it.

“I rushed there when I heard gunshots, only to see who they shot, but they [police] didn't allow me and many people were coming out to see who they shot, but they took him and put him in the van and drove off," Gabby noted.

The brother of the deceased, Gameli Akuinor, said they lodged a complaint at both the GREDA Estates and Nungua police station after their family didn’t hear of the whereabouts of Divine after waiting almost 24-hours.

“We went to GREDA Estates Police station and where they said he was an adult and he was going to get back home, but we were sceptical because it was unlike him, so, we lodged a complaint and went to the Nungua police station, where I spoke to one gentleman and learnt that there was an incident, so, he called one Mr Arhinful, who sent the pictures of my dead brother. When I saw it, I just shook my head." he noted.

Divine got shot twice and died, according to an eye witness. His remains have since been deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue.

Meanwhile, the police have declined to comment on the incident.
