The Accra Regional Police Command has issued a security advisory ahead of the official lifting of the customary ban on drumming and noise-making, which takes place today, Thursday, June 12, in Gbese, Blohum, and Abola within the Ga State.

The annual ritual, a key cultural milestone in the Ga calendar, is traditionally marked by the firing of musketry.

However, police say in recent years, some participants, particularly the youth have dangerously resorted to firing live ammunition instead of the traditional use of gunpowder or blank rounds.

In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police Command strongly warned against the use of live ammunition during this year’s celebrations.
“Any individual found engaging in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

To ensure a peaceful and safe celebration, the Command says it is working in close collaboration with traditional authorities, including the Gbese Mantse, as well as event organisers.
“The Command is working closely with traditional authorities and event organisers to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration."

Members of the public have been urged to comply with all safety directives, cooperate with officers deployed for the event, and promptly report any suspicious or unlawful activities. Reports can be made via Police emergency numbers 18555 or 112.

The Police Command also extended its goodwill to the Ga people as they observe this significant cultural occasion.

“The Command takes this opportunity to extend its best wishes to the people of the Ga State as they mark this significant cultural occasion,” it read.
