In his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Tuesday, 27th February 2024, President Akufo Addo addressed Ghana's disappointment over the premature exit from the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

Despite high hopes, the Black Stars' performance fell short, accumulating just 2 points during the campaign.

Acknowledging the nation's sadness over the outcome, President Akufo Addo highlighted the genuine apology offered by Andre Ayew, the team's captain.

"The recent AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire was probably the nadir of the performance of the Black Stars, and has left the nation saddened," he said.

"However, I am quite certain that the young men and the technical handlers would, themselves, have wanted to make our nation proud, and I believe that the captain, Andre Dede Ayew, meant every word when he rendered heartfelt apologies on behalf of his team-mates to all Ghanaians for the team’s early exit," he added.

Ayew, taking full responsibility for the team's performance, expressed heartfelt remorse on behalf of his teammates.

In his address, President Akufo Addo commended Ayew's humility and accountability, emphasizing the sincerity behind his words.

He expressed confidence that both the players and technical handlers shared the nation's desire to achieve success on the international stage.

While the AFCON exit was disappointing, President Akufo Addo's recognition of Ayew's apology reflects a spirit of unity and accountability within the Ghanaian football community.

As the nation looks towards future tournaments, this display of leadership and responsibility sets a positive example for the team and fans alike.
