Th Ghana Integrity Initiative(GII) has lauded government’s plan to amend the Criminal code as part of measures to tackle corruption head on.

The anti-corruption outfit believes the move by government is in the right direction since the country needs stiffer measures to stamp out the canker in the system.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, the Executive Director of the Initiative, Linda Ofori-Kwafo said there should be strong institution to facilitate the smooth implementation of the legislation because laws alone cannot suffice the fight against corruption.

“As an anti-corruption organization, we welcome efforts made by all stakeholders in the fight against corruption. Its welcoming news when it comes to what things the government want to do by the end of the year, its all welcoming if only government will be able to accomplish same. But we in the anti-corruption organizations will continue to hold government to account on this commitments that they have made. So we’re in support. Laws do not fight corruption by themselves.the laws have to be enforced; the laws have to be implemented. And when people are found culpable, they should be properly sanctioned,” she added.

Offenders of corruption will be charged for felony and not misdemeanor as government seeks to amend sections of the existing Criminal Offences Act to that effect.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who announced this at a Good Corporate Governance Conference in Accra lately said the move is in line with government’s quest to establish efficient mechanisms that will promote good governance.
