Razak Simpson, a defender for Nations FC, has opened up about his experiences representing the Black Stars during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, a milestone moment in his football journey.
The 26-year-old made his national team debut in matches against Angola and Niger, earning recognition for his solid performances, especially in the tough away fixture against Angola.
Recalling the moment he received the call-up, Simpson described it as a dream come true.
"One day, I got a foreign call, and when I answered, it was Otto Addo. He said, 'Congratulations, Razak Simpson.
I will call you on Thursday at 12 p.m. to be a part of the Black Stars.' After the call, I dropped to my knees and thanked God for fulfilling my long-held desire," he shared in an interview with Akoma FM.
Wearing the Black Stars jersey, however, came with its challenges. "When I wore the shirt, it became heavy on me," Simpson admitted.
"But I reminded myself that this is what I chose to do, so I had to set aside all other thoughts and focus on playing."
Despite the pride and honor of representing Ghana, Simpson’s debut coincided with the team’s disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars failed to qualify for the tournament for the first time in 21 years. Reflecting on the experience, Simpson remains optimistic about his future with the national team.
"I’ll continue doing what I’ve been doing, hoping to improve my performance and earn another call-up," he stated.
While the outcome was disappointing, Simpson’s journey to the Black Stars is a testament to perseverance and dedication, and he looks forward to contributing more in the years ahead.
