Ghanaian attacking midfielder Michael Baidoo continued his impressive form by scoring the decisive goal in IF Elfsborg's 1-0 victory over AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

Baidoo, who had already made a mark in the Europa League qualification playoffs with three goals and three assists, opened his account in the group stage by netting a crucial 44th-minute penalty at the Borås Arena.

His composed finish gave the Swedish side all three points against the Italian giants, securing their first win of the tournament after suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the opening match.

Despite AS Roma controlling much of the second half, IF Elfsborg held firm to preserve their lead.

Baidoo, who lasted 89 minutes, was pivotal throughout, continuing his excellent season with 14 goals and seven assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.

He was eventually substituted by manager Oscar Hiljemark, with Per Frick coming on in the closing moments of the match.

Baidoo's brilliance was supported by a strong defensive showing from Terry Yegbe, while former Inter Allies striker Jalal Abdulai replaced Arber Zeneli in the 63rd minute, contributing to Elfsborg’s resilient display.

With Baidoo in such remarkable form, he is expected to be named in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan, scheduled for October 11 and 14.

Ghana's head coach Otto Addo is set to announce his 25-man squad for these crucial matches on Friday, October 4, 2024.
