Senior Psychologist, Prof. Joseph Osafo, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare to whip up public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

Prof. Osafo noted that lack of public confidence in the security agencies can incite people to engage in terrorism and other acts that disturb public peace.

His comment comes on the heels of recent shootings at Nkoranza in the Bono East Region.

The youth of Nkoranza, on Tuesday, May 17, clashed with the Police in the community over the death of an alleged robbery suspect, Albert Donkor.

The youth burnt car tyres on the streets of Nkoranza to register their displeasure over the mysterious death of the suspect who they believe is an innocent 27-year-old businessman.

The angry protesters' action was met a response from the Police who fired gunshots to disperse them, reportedly resulting in the death of a member of the protesters and several others sustaining gunshot wounds.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Prof. Joseph Osafo advised the IGP and his officers to behave in a manner that the public can approach them without it resulting in a violent confrontation.

"When people lose faith in security apparatus, in jurisprudence, in governance; we are dead because then we have entered a place of no law," he said.

He believed one way to prevent people from engaging in terrorism or causing chaos is for the security agencies to be friends with the populace and present themselves in a way that the people can report suspicious persons and activities.
