A retired State Prosecutor, Ellen Kwawukume, has denied taking any bribe to foil the prosecution of gold Scammers busted by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in 2009.

Kennedy Agyepong’s documentary titled “Who Watches the Watchman?” featured the state prosecutor in a meeting with Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The video suggested the prosecutor was given $5,000 to thwart the prosecution. In that video Anas is also heard saying he had given $75,000 to the CID Director at the time, COP Adu-Poku.

In a statement, the prosecutor has denied all allegations levelled against her in the video and asked Kennedy Agyepong and the Salis newspaper to retract the allegations and apologise to her within seven days.

Kwawukume adds in the statement that she diligently worked on the case until her retirement when she handed it over. She said she decided to meet with Anas when the complainants in the case failed to turn up to testify in court on each of the three dates set for hearing.

She said later, there were many adjournments by the trial judge on whether or not Anas’ evidence should be accepted.

She accused producers of Who watches the Watchman of intentionally doctoring part of the conversation to make it seem she asked how much was paid into her account to which Anas said $5,000.

The statement also contradicts earlier accounts from Egbert Faibille Jnr on how the complainants in the gold scam stopped giving evidence on the matter.

Mr Faibille wrote on Facebook that the complainants in the case were frustrated by the trial judge through adjournment and they stopped coming to Ghana for the trial.

He added that the gold scammers had threatened his clients with juju. This he said disabled prosecution from continuing with the case.

But Egbert Faibille’s claim suggesting that the complainants had come for hearing and stopped after the frustration from the judge appears inaccurate.

According to the prosecutor, the victims of the gold scam, who were Egbert Faibille’s clients, never appeared in court.

She said, “Three dates were given for a day to day hearing, the 12th, 13th and 14th of May 2010. The complainant failed to turn up in court on all days.”

She also added that they were threatened with juju.
