Former Kotoko and Ashgold defender Richard Osei Agyemang has voiced strong criticism of the low wages in the Ghana Premier League, arguing that they are driving players to seek opportunities abroad.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Agyemang expressed deep concern over the player exodus from the Ghanaian domestic league, attributing it directly to the inadequate salaries offered.

He pointed out that the current pay structure forces many players to accept contracts in less prominent football nations due to the insufficient wages in Ghana.

“The situation is dire,” Agyemang stated. “Elsewhere, the signing-on fees for players in Ghana are equivalent to the salaries of players in those countries.

The pay here is so low that players are compelled to move abroad for better opportunities. Ideally, players should be earning around GHC10,000 to ensure they can make a living and stay in the league.”

He also criticized the overall salary structure and organization within the league, adding, “There is no player in the Ghana Premier League who is wealthy. No one. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.”

Agyemang’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among players, who have increasingly voiced their frustration over low salaries and poor working conditions in Ghanaian football.
