Brazilian police have arrested a Moroccan boxer over claims he sexually assaulted two waitresses in the Olympic Village.

Hassan Saada, 22, will be jailed for 15 days while a rape investigation is conducted. Under Brazilian law, suspects can be held while cases are examined.

He was due to fight on Saturday in the men’s light heavyweight competition against Turkey’s Mehmet Nadir in the preliminary rounds. He will now not compete.

Saada was detained on Friday morning, just hours before the opening ceremony for the showpiece event in Rio de Janeiro. The attacks were alleged to have happened on Wednesday.
