Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri has been awarded the 2024 Ballon d'Or, marking his first win of the prestigious accolade, which recognizes the world’s best footballer.

The 28-year-old’s stellar season saw him lose just one game across all competitions for club and country, making him the first Spanish player to claim the award since 1960 and the first Premier League player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 to earn the honor.

Rodri's influence on the pitch was crucial as he helped Spain secure the Euro 2024 title in July.

His impressive list of achievements with Manchester City includes winning the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

This accomplishment also makes him the first player in City’s history to win the Ballon d'Or.

In Paris, Rodri accepted the award ahead of Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr., who finished as runner-up.

English midfielder Jude Bellingham, also from Real Madrid, claimed third place — the highest finish for an English player since Frank Lampard in 2005.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony, however, saw notable absences from Real Madrid representatives.

Reports earlier in the day indicated that Real Madrid had opted not to attend after news that Vinicius would not win the top award.

Nonetheless, the club was honored as Club of the Year, and their manager, Carlo Ancelotti, was recognized as Men’s Coach of the Year.

Rodri, who appeared on stage on crutches due to an ACL injury sustained in September, expressed deep gratitude for the award, dedicating it to Spanish football.

"This is not just my victory but one for Spanish football, for players who deserved it but never won it, like Iniesta, Xavi, Casillas, and Busquets," he said. “It’s a proud moment for midfielders and for Spain.”
