The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has reiterated his commitment to making internet data more affordable for Ghanaians before the end of 2025.

Speaking at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day celebration on May 19, Mr. George responded to public outcry on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users have called for the removal of over 39% in tariffs imposed on data purchases.

Addressing the concerns, the minister clarified that the reduction in data costs cannot be implemented arbitrarily but must follow a structured process.

He revealed that a committee was established with a 14-day mandate to produce a roadmap toward lowering data prices—and successfully delivered within 13 days.

“I’ve been trending on Twitter over the weekend because people think I can just wave a pen and lower data costs. We are correcting eight years of market distortion. It’s not something that can be done overnight, but a careful, well-thought-out plan is in motion.” Mr. George said.

He assured the public that despite the challenges, his commitment remains unchanged.

“My promise stands by the end of this year, we will see a drop in data prices. Just trust the process.”

This follows his earlier comments the minister made during an interview on TV3, on April 11, where he stated that while he does not have the power to set data prices directly, he intends to use policy tools to influence affordability.

“I can’t set prices for data, but I can use policies to make data more accessible and affordable.” he said at the time.
