Samba O’Neil reluctant to renew his contract with Kotoko - Kotoko Comms Director

Asante Kotoko have admitted they are fighting a difficult battle to secure the future of key defender Samba O’Neil, with negotiations over a new contract yet to yield a breakthrough.
The Congolese centre-back, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, has been in talks with the club for almost a year. Despite several proposals from Kotoko’s management, O’Neil has so far resisted committing his future to the Kumasi-based side.
Speaking to Luv FM, the club’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, acknowledged the growing uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old’s stay.
“We sent a new proposal to Samba and his team, and we are awaiting their response,” Duku said. “Looking at how long this has taken, because we started this conversation almost a year ago, it seems increasingly difficult for the player to renew his contract.”
Interest from clubs in Libya, South Africa and Tanzania has further complicated Kotoko’s efforts, with the defender believed to be weighing his options ahead of the new season.
Still, the club have not given up hope. Duku stressed that Kotoko remain keen to keep the player, who has become an important figure in the team.
“We continue pressing with the hope that he will have a change of mind, especially if he feels he wants to continue here,” he added.
O’Neil has been one of Kotoko’s standout performers this campaign, featuring in 19 matches and scoring three goals from the back. He is expected to be in contention for selection when the Reds travel to face Heart of Lions at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Matchday 21.
For now, Kotoko supporters wait anxiously, as the club races against time to hold on to one of their most reliable defenders.
