NEW DELHI: Samsung may have opened the next chapter of smartphone innovation at its Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event, but it is quite possible that the same event marks the end of its decade-old Galaxy S-series smartphones. According to a report by South Korean website Yonhap News Agency, Samsung is "examining a new naming arrangement for its next generation flagship phones."

The report cites a source in the global marketing team of Samsung who has revealed that internal discussions about the alphanumeric system are robust. The source also suggested that this is because the buyers may it difficult to pronounce handset names that end with 11, 12 and 13. "Samsung is aware that after the S10, people may not like the longer names that will come with two-digit numbers, if we stick to the current system," said the source.

Without delving into details what may be Samsung's new naming scheme the source said, "Nothing has been decided although the company is looking at options that can appeal to consumers."

Interestingly, the Galaxy Note series -- the flagship phablet from Samsung -- will also get its 10th smartphone in 2019 and may follow suit when its comes to new naming of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

This is not the first time Samung is contemplating a new name for its flagship smartphones. To recall, one year ago, when the company had just launched the Galaxy S9 smartphone, DJ Koh, Samsung's CEO of mobile division had said that the company was looking into the possibility of a new naming scheme for its next Galaxy S flagship device. "Although Samsung will stick to Galaxy, we have been thinking about whether we need to maintain the S moniker or the numbering system," Koh said. With one whole year ahead of the new Galaxy S-series smartphone launch, it is difficult to say at this point whether or not Samsung will adopt a new name for its 2020 flagship smartphones.
