The Paramount Chief of Sankore in the Ahafo Region, Nana Ogyedom Appiah Kubi Pabo Katakye IV, has appealed to traditional rulers and security agencies across the country to take an active role in combating illegal mining in order to safeguard farmlands and secure the future of agriculture.

Delivering his address at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration held in Sankore under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” the chief lamented the extensive destruction of fertile lands by illegal miners. He said the rapid depletion of farmlands poses a serious threat to food production and rural livelihoods.

According to him, although government interventions against galamsey are yielding results, their success will be greatly strengthened if chiefs and security personnel fully commit to the fight.

“As custodians of the land, we cannot sit back while our farmlands are destroyed. Government efforts are commendable, but stronger collaboration with chiefs and the security agencies will make a greater impact,” he stated.

Also speaking at the event, Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner called on residents to support government programmes aimed at revitalising agriculture.

She highlighted the economic and health benefits of consuming locally produced food, noting that it also creates employment opportunities and strengthens national development.

She urged farmers and consumers alike to embrace the “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana” agenda as a collective responsibility toward building a resilient agricultural sector.
