Security has been significantly tightened in the Ablekuma North Constituency as the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations today, Friday, July 11, 2025.

Heavy police presence has been observed at key locations across the constituency, especially in areas previously identified as flashpoints. The rerun pits the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie against the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn.

Citi News checks reveal a notable increase in police deployment near volatile zones, including the St. Peter Society Methodist Church formerly the collation centre during the disputed 2024 parliamentary elections. That election ended in chaos, with property reportedly damaged. As a result, church authorities have denied the EC access to the venue for today’s exercise.

In response to public concerns about security, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah assured Ghanaians that no military personnel would be deployed for the rerun.

“There will be no military deployment. The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job.”

The rerun was necessitated by the annulment of results from 19 polling stations following legal challenges after the December 7, 2024, elections. The Ablekuma North seat has remained vacant since, with today's vote expected to finally determine its rightful occupant.

Both candidates have expressed optimism ahead of the rerun, as election observers and stakeholders monitor turnout and the conduct of the polls throughout the day.
