Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has advised the newly formed Ghana Law Society to seek formal recognition and licensing from the General Legal Council (GLC) as part of its bid to operate as a professional body for legal practitioners.

The advice follows a legal challenge filed by the Ghana Law Society at the Supreme Court, contesting the Ghana Bar Association’s (GBA) longstanding status as the sole recognised professional association for lawyers in the country.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Ghana Law Society in Accra on Thursday, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasised the importance of following due legal processes.

“To us, it means you must have a certificate from the General Legal Council. So, when in your speech you say that you are going to make a representation to the General Legal Council for recognition and licensing, it will be in the right direction. Because all that we are interested in at the General Legal Council is that you will possess our license,” he stated.

If successful, the Supreme Court case could significantly alter the structure of Ghana’s legal profession by paving the way for multiple professional associations to exist alongside the GBA.
