Flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has encouraged party delegates to select candidates capable of wrestling power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Former President Mahama who wished all contesting candidates the best indicated that the power lies in the hands of the delegates.

Mr Mahama encouraged the delegates to selects persons who “are ready and willing to serve you and your communities, work for you and campaign with you to wrestle power from the NPP in 2020.”

In a Facebook post, Mr Mahama also prayed for an incident free election.

The post read: “It’s decision day, and I wish all our comrades contesting to represent our great party in the 2020 parliamentary elections the best of luck.

“To you our dear Delegates, the power is in your hands. Let’s select the best candidates who are ready and willing to serve you and your communities, work for you and campaign with you to wrestle power from the NPP in 2020.

“Vote for the best candidates and I pray for an incident free election.

“Best of luck.”

The parliamentary primaries will be held in 157 constituencies across the country where 524 aspirants have been cleared to contest.

But the party has suspended the primary elections at the Asawase and Ellembelle constituencies as well as three other constituencies due to petitions by some of the aspirants.

There will also be no election in 39 other constituencies where incumbent Members of Parliaments or aspirants are contesting unopposed.

Six aspirants in the primaries were disqualified a few days to the polls.

The affected persons were Alhaji Ibrahim Dori for Bawku Central, Dr. King Suleyman Dima Bachiesichang for Sisala East, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Rabiyu for Salaga North, Maxwell Okah Okai for Agona East, Raphael Parku and Kwame Aduhene Kwarteng, both for the Juaboso Constituency.
