Ghanaians have taken to social media to shower praise on President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government following the announcement of a 15% reduction in transport fares by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

The fare reduction, which takes effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025, comes after an agreement between the GPRTU and the Ministry of Transport.

The move is seen as a response to recent decreases in fuel prices, and the GPRTU has assured the public of full compliance among its members to ensure smooth implementation.

Social media platforms such as Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) have been buzzing with positive reactions. Many users have commended the government for acting in the interest of ordinary Ghanaians during tough economic times.

“This is what I voted for. Long live President Mahama,” one user posted on X.

“JM the president ever to turn things around,” another user wrote.

The GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, stated that the fare reduction is aimed at easing the financial burden on commuters and is part of their contribution to national economic recovery efforts.

“We’ve directed all our members to comply with the 15% fare reduction. Any driver who refuses will face disciplinary action,” he said in an earlier statement.

He also urged passengers to report any drivers who fail to adjust fares accordingly, emphasizing that such cases should be handled lawfully through the appropriate authorities.

The announcement comes as fuel prices have dropped by approximately 18% in recent weeks. Though fare reductions typically reflect only a third of such changes, the GPRTU opted for a 15% decrease this time to provide additional relief.

The move has been widely welcomed by the public and is expected to positively impact daily commuters, particularly those in urban centers who rely on commercial transport.
