Ningo-Prampram MP and Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, has sharply criticized New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his comments on the violence that disrupted the recent parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North.

In a strongly worded post on social media Friday, Sam George hit out at Dr. Bawumia, saying, “Someone should tell Bawumia to shut up. What did he say about Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019?”

The comments were in response to Dr. Bawumia's condemnation of the violence that unfolded at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where unidentified men stormed the area and disrupted voting.

The chaos left several individuals, including former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, physically assaulted, while others including NPP members and a journalist sustained injuries.

Dr. Bawumia, warned that Ghana’s democratic stability could be in jeopardy if political violence becomes widespread.
“This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party raises its own army,” he said, adding that President John Mahama must ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violence.

“We must not forget what happened. This is not the democracy we want to see,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized.

However, Sam George took issue with Dr. Bawumia’s sudden concern, citing the former Vice President’s silence during the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence in 2019.

During that incident, security personnel were caught on camera assaulting opposition supporters, a situation that was widely condemned by civil society organisations and international observers.

The exchange between the two political figures comes amid growing tension following Thursday’s events in Ablekuma North, which have sparked widespread condemnation from civil society, election observers, and the general public.

With the December 2024 general elections on the horizon, many are calling for a thorough investigation by the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service to prevent further incidents of political violence.

Political analysts stress that ensuring accountability and professionalism in security operations will be essential to maintaining the public’s trust in Ghana’s democratic processes.
