Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for strong national collaboration to drive the success of the Ghana Petroleum Hub project, urging both state institutions and private stakeholders to support the initiative led by the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC).

Addressing a strategic retreat on Saturday, June 7, 2025, between the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and the PHDC, Speaker Bagbin underscored the scale of the project and the critical role Parliament must play in ensuring its implementation.

“This initiative is a brilliant one, and PHDC cannot do it alone,” he stated. “They need critical partners — and one of the most crucial in any democratic setup is Parliament. All government agencies must collaborate with Parliament to ensure the success of this project. Failure to do so will be to our collective detriment.”

Reaffirming his commitment as a member of the Energy Committee, Bagbin expressed confidence in the hub’s potential to transform Ghana’s economy and elevate the country to upper-middle-income status.

“Ghana currently sits at the lower end of the middle-income ladder. We need bold, innovative initiatives like this to climb higher,” he said. “Look at Singapore — a small city-state that doesn’t produce oil but has become the world’s oil refining hub. Ghana has the potential to do the same and even more.”

The Speaker endorsed the Petroleum Hub as a strategic national priority, noting that it could serve as a catalyst for broader industrial development and job creation.

The retreat, which featured full participation from Members of Parliament, saw active engagement with PHDC officials, with MPs posing critical questions and pledging bipartisan support for the project.

The Ghana Petroleum Hub, when fully developed, is expected to position Ghana as a major player in Africa’s petroleum and petrochemical industry, with benefits including increased exports, industrial diversification, and significant foreign direct investment.
