Spotify, the world’s most popular paid music streaming service, said it racked up more than 1 million unique users in India across its free and premium tiers since launching less than a week ago.
Spotify finally launched in India last Tuesday with its free service and paid subscription along with top-up plans. Spotify presently rivals with local and international streaming services in India. There’s Reliance Industries’ JioSaavn and Apple’s Apple Music and more platforms like Gaana, Wynk Music and Amazon Prime Music.
Spotify’s subscription plans are almost the same as what Apple is offering for Apple Music. The Swedish company however doesn’t have its family plans available in India, as yet. Spotify is free to download on Android and iOS. Users can subscribe to the service with at a monthly rate of Rs 119. Spotify is also available through top-up plans starting at Rs 13 per day.
India, with a population of 1.3 billion and more than 400 million smartphone users, is a potentially huge market for the Swedish company.
According to media reports, Tencent-backed Gaana leads the Indian streaming market with over 80 million monthly users. Spotify has 207 million monthly active users globally and 96 million subscribers.
