Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah, affectionately known as Tornado, has reportedly made the decision to run for the parliamentary seat in the Ayawaso West Wougon constituency.

The esteemed former Juventus player will enter the political arena as an independent candidate, seeking to navigate the complexities of Ghana's politics.

This announcement was made by Fiifi Tackie, spokesperson for the Ayew family and former journalist, through a tweet shared on his Twitter handle.

Stephen Appiah rose to prominence in the early 2000s, representing the Black Stars in numerous Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and captaining the team to its first-ever World Cup appearance in 2006, held in Germany.

He also participated in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa before retiring from professional football.

Although Appiah has kept his political aspirations private in the past, his decision to contest the parliamentary seat signals a new chapter in his career post-football.

Throughout his illustrious career, Appiah played for renowned clubs such as Juventus, Parma, Galatasaray, and Vojvodina in Serbia, in addition to his stint with Accra Hearts of Oak.

In the upcoming December 2024 elections, Appiah will vie for the parliamentary seat against prominent candidates like the NPP's Lydia Seyram Alhassan and the NDC candidate and movie star John Dumelo, adding further intrigue to the political landscape of Ayawaso West Wougon.
