A farming community, Kwadjo Nkansah Basic School in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region is currently under siege as the community school lacks infrastructure, forcing the students to learn under trees.
A heavy rainstorm in April collapsed the wooden structure that was serving as the classroom block.
Due to that the students from class One to stage six were left with no option but to study under trees, with no blackboards to write on, which is affecting the learning and teaching in the community.
A visit to the school by DAILY GUIDE revealed that a three-unit classroom block, which was awarded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has been abandoned for the past five years.
The situation has forced many of the children to stop schooling due to a lack of classrooms, and furniture, as those who intend to learn had to bring their own chairs and other learning materials to use.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the Member of Parliament, for the area, Joseph Frimpong recently donated some cement and rods for a temporary structure for the pupils.
A teacher in the school name withheld told DAILY GUIDE that, “Our major problem is school infrastructure. Early this year, a heavy downpour collapsed our school buildings from Kindergarten to basic six since then, we’ve been having classes under trees, and in case rain sets in then we have to bring it close abruptly’’.
According to him, ‘’Currently, the rain has reduced a bit but we are being hit by the sun rays disturbs us because when it pierces through the branches of the trees, it disturbs the children from reading and that also causes abrupt closure of school”.
He expressed worries that “Having classes under trees has also weakened most of our desks, forcing four students to share a desk during classes. We have a student population of 250 and because of our situation some of the students have dropped out because there isn’t comfort during classes’’.
‘’We are appealing to the government and any organization to support these children by putting up infrastructure for us. There is an ongoing project in the school (Three Unit classroom) but it has been abandoned for about five years so if it can be completed for us, we will be grateful”.
“We lack washrooms, and chalkboards because of the collapse of our buildings. We now manage to teach the children and this has become a major worry to me being the leader of the school. The performance has been good. the school first wrote BECE in 2019 and we had 100 percent same as the following year and then in the third year, we had 65.7 percent pass so we are waiting for the recent results”
“We’ve informed all officials with regards to our situation and they assured us of fixing the problems, so we are waiting for them.
He also noted that aside from the lack of infrastructure, the school also lack teachers, teaching materials, urinals, as the students and the teahcers are force to ease themselves in a bush.
‘’Again, we all resort to the bush anytime nature calls. We will plead with the government to act swiftly to this unwanted situation to enable students to have access to good education” he said.
