The by-election in Tamale Central has taken a dramatic twist after two opposition candidates abruptly withdrew from the race just hours after filing their nominations.

A reliable source within the Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed to Channel One News that the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidates, who submitted their papers on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, have officially pulled out.

Their withdrawal leaves the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the only party in the contest, effectively clearing the way for the NDC to retain the seat.

Tamale Metro EC Director, Anaba Samson, had earlier indicated that five candidates — from the NDC, LPG, PNC, All People’s Congress (APC), and one Independent — were expected to file.

By the 5:00 p.m. deadline, only three had successfully submitted nominations: the NDC, LPG, and PNC.

With the sudden withdrawal of the PNC and LPG, the NDC is now unchallenged, pending the EC’s official confirmation of the updated status of the race in the coming days.
