Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has accused President John Mahama of failing to show leadership in addressing illegal small-scale mining, widely known as galamsey.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 21, Mr. Mohammed claimed that the President has turned his back on Ghanaians, despite growing public outcry over the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.
“The President has simply turned his back on Ghanaians on this critical issue. He campaigned on change, yet remains silent as our forests and rivers disappear,” he stated.

Mr. Mohammed argued that President Mahama's lack of decisive action contradicts his commitments to sustainable development and responsible governance.

“We cannot continue to watch while galamsey operators destroy our environment. Leadership means taking difficult decisions and on this, the President has failed.”

He urged civil society, traditional authorities, and concerned citizens to hold the government accountable and press for urgent intervention.

“The time for excuses is over. What Ghanaians need now is action," he said.
