Have you ever wondered how when you are having a bad day at work, you end up taking out the tension and stress on someone living with you? This not only creates high tension environment at home but also impacts your sleep!

Any kind of work-related stress and tension is very unhealthy and this extends to outside the workplace environment as well. If you do not get along with your colleagues at work, or worse, if somebody is giving you a hard time at the office, it might be causing you insomnia, according to a study.
As per a study conducted by researchers based out of Portland and Oregan based Universities, any instance of rudeness in the workplace or behaviour where you are put down by someone else can be costing you your sleep and in rare cases, your partner’s sleep too.
Researchers analysed the profiles of 700 employees who worked between 8-10 hours a day and were asked to detail examples of workplace rudeness, along with the number of hours they slept every night, their alcohol intake and their ability to detach from work once they got home. It was also extended to couples who tended to work in similar profiles or the same workplace and shared their day with each other.
After the results were collected, it was observed that there is a stark difference in the way the person sleeps. They did not just feel stressed and angry, this added toll on their mind was not letting them sleep on time and also caused them to wake up in the middle of the night often.
This also extended to their partners, who they often vented out to in times of troubles. They experienced disturbed sleep patterns as well.

However, the people who had the habit of completely switching off from work once they got off their daily job experienced better sleep overall, apart from having more energy to do the work the next day.

What is the solution to this?

It is important to have clear distinction between your profile when you are work and when you are home. However, if something is bothering you at work, it is not wrong to discuss it with your partner but make sure that your quality unwinding time is not compromised.

Ensure that proper sleeping conditions are maintained. The bedroom and surrounding areas should be very comfortable. Have a relaxing tea or practice light yoga or meditation to get instant relief and go to bed relaxed. Else, when you wake up in the middle of the night or go to bed angry, you actually compromise on your REM Sleep which in turn makes your next day worse.
