Tom Saintfiet has assumed the position of head coach for the Philippines national team after turning down offers from three prominent African countries.

The former Gambia coach was being courted by Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon for their respective top coaching roles.

Saintfiet had been in discussions with the Ghana Football Association and appeared to be leading the race for the vacant position.

However, the Belgian tactician, who also received a late call from FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto'o, ultimately opted to accept the opportunity with the Philippines.

"I was seeking a challenging project, something ambitious," explained Saintfiet during his unveiling.

"In my experience with national team football, success isn't solely about having the best players. It's about character, dedication. Representing your country is the pinnacle achievement."

Freddy Gonzalez, Director of the Philippines national teams, confirmed the interest from the three African nations and China.

"I can be quite persuasive when I need to be. Naturally, he was among the candidates. While not the sole contender, after assessing all options, I felt he embodied what we were seeking," stated Gonzalez at a pre-match press conference.

"At the outset of our discussions, he was already being courted by Ghana, Nigeria, and China for coaching positions. I managed to sway him away from those offers and join us.

However, at the eleventh hour, Samuel Eto'o reached out, approximately a week ago, expressing interest in him coaching Cameroon. I'm thrilled he chose us," Gonzalez added.
