Editor of The NewsCenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has urged suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to remain steadfast in her legal battle, describing her defiance as a pivotal move to expose and resist executive overreach into Ghana’s Judiciary.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 30, Mr. Darko commended the Chief Justice for refusing to resign amid mounting pressure and impeachment proceedings.

“This is the best thing she has done so far. I’ve said from the beginning that she should never resign. What she’s doing is forcing this country to confront the truth that the Judiciary is weak and increasingly at the mercy of the Executive due to the way certain laws are crafted,” she said.

Justice Torkornoo has been on suspension since April 22, 2025, following a prima facie case established by President John Mahama in consultation with the Council of State, under Article 146(10) of the Constitution.

A five-member committee is currently investigating multiple petitions against her in private hearings.

Despite four unsuccessful legal attempts to halt the process, and reports of threats aimed at coercing her resignation, the Chief Justice has vowed to stay the course.

Mr. Darko argued that her resistance has sparked national awareness about the structural fragility of the judiciary.
“Whether she is removed or not, she has made it clear that the system is flawed. Judges must now understand that if they don’t fight for their independence, any government can target them," he said.

He called for urgent reforms to protect the Judiciary from political interference, stating bluntly, “She must fight this till the very end, not just for herself, but for the future of Ghana’s justice system. Right now, the Judiciary is the weakest arm of government. It must be protected and insulated from executive control,” he said.
