The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025.

This decision follows a meeting held on Monday, May 19, between the GPRTU’s National Executive and the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe.

Speaking to Accra-based TV3 GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed that the reduction was prompted by an 18% decrease in fuel prices.

He emphasized that the move aims to ease the financial burden on commuters.

“Following our discussions with the Minister of Transport, we’ve agreed to implement a 15% reduction in fares, beginning this Saturday,” Mr. Moro stated.

He explained that although the union usually adjusts fares based on one-third of any change in fuel prices, this particular cut was deliberately more generous.

“This time, we went further than our standard formula to align more closely with recent fuel price trends and provide relief to the public,” he said.

Mr. Moro also called on stakeholders in related industries, particularly the spare parts sector, to consider adjusting their prices downward as well.

He noted that the fare reduction was not dependent on changes in other operating costs.

“We didn’t wait for other cost components to drop. We acted promptly in response to the fuel situation,” he clarified.

The PRO also issued a firm warning to GPRTU members, stressing that any driver or operator who fails to implement the fare cut will face disciplinary action.

“Once the union has made a decision, every member is bound to follow,” he cautioned.
