Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien says he’s proud of the Black Princesses despite their 4-1 humbling at the hands of hosts France in the opening game of the 2018 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder is in Brittany as one of the high profile personalities invited for the tournament's first day.

The 35 year old paid a surprise visit to team Ghana ahead of the game and has taken to social media to encourage the team after their disappointing start.

Essien encouraged the team to keep their head up and continue to fight for the nation in the remaining two games of Group A.

Ghana next play debutants Netherlands who defeated New Zealand in their opening match.
