The Mininster for Health, Kweku Agyemang-Manu after touring the University of Ghana Medical Center has announced that the facility is set to be opened on July 18.

According to him, the Medical facility will start functioning by taking cases relating to  Out Patient Department (OPD), with Laboratory and Pharmacy services, as well as specialist services in three departments – Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services.

The $127 million facility will kick start with nearly 40 staffers according to officials as the Health Minister announced on Wednesday July 11.

The opening comes on the back of complaints of lack of beds in hospitals across the country.

The University's Medical School was commissioned by the erstwhile Mahama administration but has however remained shut.

Management of the facility has long been a serious bone of contention between the University of Ghana and current Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, a reason why opening of the facility hitherto stalled.

The facility is an extension of tertiary care in reference to advanced levels of medicine.
