Over 28,000 students have been admitted into the University of Ghana for the 2018/19 academic year.

This year, a total of 43,215 applications were received by the University, but only 28,149 of them got admission.

The number of admissions represents about 65% of the total applications received. This is as a result of the University’s inability to accommodate the high number of students who applied.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, said they are working on solutions to ensure that the problem of accommodation is solved.

According to him, the University is looking to partner companies in order to build new residential facilities on campus within the next two years.

He noted that providing accommodation for all fresh students has always been a challenge for the university in recent times, although some new halls of residence have been put up.

The Vice-Chancellor was speaking at Saturday’s matriculation ceremony held for the University’s newly-admitted students.

He lamented that about 7,289 of the fresh students are entitled to residence but only 2,488 of them have been offered accommodation.

“This clearly indicates an improvement in female-male ratio trend from 40:60 to 49:50. The university will continue to strive towards achieving the 50:50 ratio or better,” Prof. Owusu said.

He also cautioned the students not to do anything that is contrary to the University’s rules, adding that sanctions will be meted out to all defaulters.

“As fresh students you are expected to contribute your quota to enhance the university’s image wherever you find yourself, and to ensure that you do not do anything that will bring the name of the university to into disrepute,” he warned.
