Dzogborve Basic School Girls’ soccer team have been crowned Champions of the first edition of the South Tongu District Girls Soccer Tournament which took place at the Sogakope SHS (Sogasco) Park, after beating Hikpo Basic school by 1-0 in the finals.

The 9-Girls-School Soccer Tournament in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, which was sponsored by a Non-Governmental Organization, Plan International Ghana saw Dzogborve Girls cruise to the finals after defeating Anyizikpo by 3-0 in the semifinals.

They were presented with a trophy and certificates after the glorious and emphatic victory. Dordorkope basic school that emerged 2nd runners up managed a 1-0 victory over Kpatome basic school.

The tournament follows an initiative by Plan International Ghana, the NGO that seeks to give equal opportunities to the Girls in the male dominated sport.

The Organization that seeks to promote Girls Education, last month donated sets of jerseys and others to the 9-basic school’s in district after encouraging the formation of the Teams in collaboration with the District Physical Education (P. E) Coordinator.

Other schools that participated in the one-day tournament include Agbakpoe, Larvae, Tadze, and Agbogbla basic schools.

After the tournament, the District P.E Coordinator of South Tongu, Wonder Girentsi told Volta Regional based TalksenseSports, they will plan for Inter District tournament next year.

“It was a successful tournament and a colorful one", he said.

"The next stage is going to be Inter district competition, God willing next year. The NGO is within three districts in the Volta Region, South Tongu, Hohoe and Afadzato South.

"So, each District is to form a team for us to meet at a venue for the tournament. I must express my appreciation to all who helped made this possible especially, Plan international Ghana", Mr. Girentsi added.

The tournament was attended by Project development Coordinator of Plan International Ghana, Seth Asomaning, District Director of the Ghana Education Service, Evelyn Araba Zentey and South Tongu District Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Robert Oral-Amenyo. Elkanah Darkoh and Dish John are other staff of the NGO who witnessed the tournament.

The solid support for the tournament from Plan International Ghana, is to ensure the development of these young ones grows steadily for a brighter future. Women football in the Volta region will be given a major boost, with this initiative.
