Ghana's Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially inaugurated the renovated University of Ghana stadium, known as Legon Stadium, in Accra on Friday.

The stadium's refurbishment was undertaken to accommodate the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.

The colorful ceremony marked the commencement of preparations for the Games, set to officially begin on March 8. The stadium, boasting an 11,000-seat capacity, was unveiled amid the festivities.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the significance of the African Games, describing it as a symbol of African unity, independence, and cooperation, both politically and economically.

He also highlighted the event's alignment with the United Nations' recognition of sports as a catalyst for sustainable socio-economic development.

Acknowledging the challenges faced during the construction of various sports facilities, including the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Rugby Field, and Borteyman Sports Complex, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the long-term benefits of hosting the African Games.

He stressed that the gains far outweigh the costs, citing the substantial returns that Ghana stands to gain from the event.

The African Games will attract over 13,000 elite athletes, sports administrators, technical experts, officials, and volunteers, who will compete in various sports disciplines.

The event promises to showcase African sporting excellence while fostering unity, cultural exchange, and friendly competition among participants.

The successful hosting of the African Games underscores Ghana's commitment to promoting peace, unity, and socio-economic development.
