African wax print specialist Vlisco launched its new Women’s Mentoring Program designed to empower and support the brightest female talent across Ghana.

65 young women attended the launch with workshops, speed mentoring and a panel discussion featuring all five past Vlisco ambassadors, designed to inspire attendees to achieve their professional goals.

The event which coincide with the International Women’s Day, was hosted at the Holiday Inn, Accra, inviting more than 60 young women to learn from the experiences of past Vlisco Ambassadors.

Each previous Vlisco Ambassador to mentor one young woman for remainder of 2019  in a way to empower Ghana’s most inspiring future female leaders.

The Vlisco Women’s Mentoring Program was launched with the aim of impacting the lives of young Ghanaian women by providing guidance on developing key skills in a variety of relevant areas. Those in attendance had the opportunity to observe an engaging panel session and pose questions to the Vlisco Ambassadors. This session was moderated by renowned MC and TV Presenter, Kokui Selormey who lead the panellists through discussions on several women-related topics, in line with the 2019 International Women’s Day Theme: Balance for Better.

To provide a truly immersive learning experience, guests were then split into smaller groups and hosted in 90-minute workshops with the Ambassadors around topics such as developing an elevator pitch, techniques for networking, navigating the male boardroom and Emotional Intelligence. In true Vlisco fashion, two Ghanaian fashion designers, Marise and Constance Mensah showcased their latest collections which featured Vlisco prints during two fashion shows at the event.

Vlisco has long been a brand that not only creates beautiful fashion but one that inspires and champions the role of women in our society. Vlisco Women’s Month (VWM) is an annual campaign to pay tribute and honour Ghana’s most inspirational and successful women, culminating in the selection of an ambassador who works with the brand to continue delivering the message of empowerment to the younger generation. This year, the purpose was to create more long-lasting impact with the women they seek to inspire, celebrating Ghanaian women and engaging future talent, thus The Vlisco Women’s Mentoring Program was born.

Each Ambassador will now choose one mentee to begin a yearlong mentorship program creating a forum where they can actively engage with and have a positive impact on the younger generation who aspire to follow in their footsteps.

In introducing the new Program, Vlisco Marketing Director Mr. Stephen Badu elaborated on the mandate to impact the lives of young Ghanaian women not only through beauty and fashion but through insightful conversations with the Vlisco Ambassadors who have extensive experience in a variety of industries.

He said, “This is a very exciting new chapter for the Vlisco Women’s Month, not only because it is the first time we are bringing all our ambassadors together but because their shared momentum will become a truly inspiring light to these young women. As our current ambassador Edith Uyovbukerhi believes, African women are uniquely placed by way of heritage to be a formidable force for advancement and achievement of women globally. We are all excited to see what great things come from it over the next year.”

He cited examples of some of the work Ambassadors have engaged in such as Legacy Girls, an all-girls Senior High School Co-Founded by Mrs. Ellen Hagan (Vlisco Ambassador, 2013), The Young Educators Foundation by Eugenia Tachie-Menson (Vlisco Ambassador, 2014), The Girl’s Education Initiative of Ghana by Elizabeth Patterson (Vlisco Ambassador, 2015), Tech Needs Girls by Regina Honu (Vlisco Ambassador, 2016) and LittleBigSouls, charity for premature babies Co-Founded by Edith Uyovbukerhi (Vlisco Ambassador, 2018).
