13th February 2026
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has revealed that preparations for the government’s flagship Women’s Development Bank are well underway. She made the announcement on February 12, 2026, while addressing the 65th End-of-Year Gathering and General Meeting of the Greater Accra Markets Association (GAMA).
According to the Vice President, a two-day workshop has already been held to finalise key strategies for the initiative.
“Our aim is not speed for its own sake, but sustainability and impact. We are determined to build progressively and deliver on a mandate that genuinely benefits those who have long been left in the gaps of our economic system. The women in our markets deserve nothing less,” she said.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the vital role market women play in supporting families and communities, noting that the vibrancy of Ghanaian markets is built on their strength and resilience.
She stressed that peace, stability, and community development often begin with women, whose contributions to national progress are indispensable.
Acknowledging the challenging conditions under which many market women operate, she emphasised the need for improved work environments. “Our market women deserve to work with dignity, safety, and peace. Addressing these concerns has led to accelerated infrastructure development, including market revitalisation projects,” she noted.
The Vice President further commended GAMA for adopting a theme that promotes healthy living, describing it as a strong reminder that economic empowerment must go hand in hand with personal well-being.
