Voting has begun in some 47 district and municipal assemblies affected by the possible creation of six administrative regions.

As at 6am Thursday, December 27, Joy News correspondents report of long queues of the electorate at many of the voting centres even ahead of the start of the voting.

The newly proposed regions are Western North, Ahafo, Bono East, Oti, North East and Savanna (WABONS).

Tension is high in the Volta region where there is strong opposition to the proposed Oti region after police say they have uncovered a plot by anti-Oti region campaigners to cause mayhem.

Police in the Region say they have received reports that some chiefs are organising motor riders to disrupt today’s referendum, the first in almost three decades.

The process has so far been peaceful, in all the affected areas.

The residents will thumbprint the yellow space on the ballot paper to vote ‘YES’ or the brown, to vote ‘NO’.

Voting is expected to end officially at 5pm after which counting will be done and results declared.
