WAFU B U17 Championship: Prosper Ogum shares delight after triumphs with Starlets
Prosper Narteh Ogum, head coach of Ghana’s Black Starlets, has shared the powerful message he delivered to his players ahead of their 2–0 semifinal victory over Nigeria in the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship.
Goals from Michael Awuli and Robinho Yao Gavi sealed the win at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, securing Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Ogum revealed:
“I was motivated to play against Nigeria. I spoke to the players and explained to them why we cannot afford to lose against Nigeria.”
“I told them I do not hold their passport to the AFCON, but they rather do — and they did exactly as we planned.”
Ogum, who previously managed Asante Kotoko, expressed pride in achieving the team’s primary objective:
“A lot of things went through my mind because I was told the plan was to qualify for the AFCON, and achieving the target is something that I am proud of.”
The win sets up a final showdown against hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Friday, October 3 — a chance for redemption after Ghana’s 3–0 group-stage loss to the Ivorians.
With qualification secured, Ogum’s side now chase the WAFU B title, aiming to cap off their resurgence with silverware and a statement of intent ahead of AFCON 2026.
