Israel Syria attack

Israeli fighter jets have launched a number of missiles toward the Syrian capital Damascus. Syrian air defense responded to the attack, destroying most of the missiles. An official military source said the “Israeli aggression” was limited to a strike on a warehouse near the Damascus international airport. The attack caused only material damage. The Israeli air force has staged repeated air raids against Syrian military bases that it claims are used by Iranian military advisors. Iran has been offering military advisory support to Syria at the request of Damascus.

Russia slams US

Russia has slammed the US, saying it has been waging illegal wars around the world, while accusing others of doing so. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said, in recent years, the US has conducted illegal military aggressions and has tried to pass them off as legal actions. Maria Zakharova added that these range from U-S-backed right-wing coups in Latin America to invasions as part of the so-called war on terror in the Middle East. She noted that such actions are in gross violation of international law. Zakharova reiterated that the US military withdrawal from Syria is a step in the right direction. But she stressed that the territory the US is vacating must come under Syrian government control.

US govt. shutdown

The speaker of the US House of Representatives says the Democrats have a better idea to improve the country’s border security and eventually end the prolonged government shutdown. Nancy Pelosi added that it is now up to President Donald Trump to make the next move to end the shutdown. She made the remarks during a ceremonial signing of a House bill that restores funding for two federal government agencies that have been closed due to the shutdown. The Senate now has to vote on the bill, but its Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said he will not bring the measure up for voting as the GOP stands with the president to get the funding.

Venezuela presidency

President of Venezuela’s opposition-led National Assembly has called on the country’s army to turn against President Nicolas Maduro. Juan Guaido accused Maduro of breaking the chain of command in Venezuela. Guaido stressed that he is prepared to assume presidency on an interim basis. The proposal came as the parliament has also called for a massive protest against Maduro. Meanwhile, the newly sworn-in Venezuelan president has accused the opposition groups of destabilizing the country.

FBI Trump inquiry

US media reports say the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an inquiry in 2017 to find out whether President Donald Trump was working on behalf of Russia. According to the New York Times, the dual counter-intelligence and criminal probe was opened after Trump fired FBI director James Comey in May 2017. Counter-intelligence agents were reportedly trying to find out whether Trump was knowingly or unknowingly working for Moscow and whether he was a threat to national security. The criminal part of the probe was related to Trump's firing of Comey. The report also said that the investigation was unfolded into the special council probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 presidential election. Trump has repeatedly criticized the Russia probe as a witch hunt.Source: presstv.com
