Iran warning

Tehran warns Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that it will no longer tolerate their support for anti-Iran terrorists. The bodies of 27 members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, killed in a recent terrorist attack in the southeast of Iran, have been laid to rest in their hometown, Isfahan. The funeral procession was attended by high-ranking officials of the IRGC.

US tariffs row

The Canadian foreign minister says it is very important that the US lifts its tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada. Chrystia Freeland made the remarks during a meeting with US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. She warned Washington about Ottawa’s retaliatory measures, adding that they indeed have an effect. Freeland’s remarks came three days after a US senator said Trump’s tariffs were standing even though the US, Canada and Mexico had reached a trade deal in November 2018.

Germany anti-war rally

Thousands of people have staged an anti-war protest in the German city of Munich. The demonstrators marched, waving banners and calling for peace. They gathered outside the hotel in which world leaders have been attending the second day of the Munich Security conference. The demonstrators demanded an immediate stop to all German weapons exports. They said German-made weaponry is being used in the Saudi war against Yemen.

Nigeria vote delay fallout

Nigeria’s Electoral Commission has provided more details about the postponement of Saturday’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for calm as the opposition called the postponement a ploy to rig the elections. Danjuma Abdullahi has more from Abuja.

Iran dismisses US allegation

Iran has roundly rejected the allegation of anti-Semitism leveled by US vice president Mike Pence, as a lie. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says such ridiculous accusations are unfortunate and made out of ignorance. He says Iran is against Zionists, but has always supported Jews. Pence accused Iran of Nazi-like anti-Semitism on Friday after visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. Iran is home to a Jewish community of 10 to 20 thousand which is believed to be the biggest in the Middle East outside Israel. Jews are represented in Iran’s parliament by one lawmaker.

Anger at bin Salman visit

People in Pakistan have staged a rally against the planned visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to their country. The protest was held in the city of Rawalpindi with demonstrators calling on the government not to allow the Saudi Crown Prince to enter Pakistan. The protesters slammed the Saudi war on Yemen and called bin Salman a killer and a war criminal. The protests have been going on for the past few days in different cities. Strict security measures have been put in place in Rawalpindi as well as the capital Islamabad. The Saudi prince has delayed his trip to Pakistan by a day. He arrived in Islamabad on Sunday.

Trump UN pick withdraws

The US president’s pick to be the new American ambassador to the United Nations, Heather Nauert, has withdrawn her nomination for the job. Nauert said in a statement that the decision was made in the best interest of her family. Donald Trump had announced Nauert as his choice for the post last December to replace Nikki Haley. But the former Fox News presenter was criticized by Democrats for her lack of diplomatic experience.
