It has been doom for Ghanaian clubs in African inter-club competitions as they usually fall by the roadside and are unable to compete.

A Ghanaian club last won an African interclub title in 2005 when Hearts of Oak defeated fierce rivals Asante Kotoko on penalties in the CAF Confederations Cup.

Since then it has been failure upon failure with the closest local clubs have gone being the group stages.

According to former Ghana Football Association(GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi Ghanaian clubs cannot keep selling their best players to their competitors and expect to perform well in African inter-club competitions.

"I feel the quality of players is also a problem. Asante Kotoko sold all their quality players to teams they will be competing with. So, if you sell these players to your competitors you don't expect to do well" he told Kings TV.

"I feel we must invest in players and the technical team so they can train the players well, it is very important. It's all about money and we need a way to support teams playing in Africa by giving them some financial incentives.

Asante Kotoko after winning the Ghana Premier League let go of key players such as Fabio Gama, Frank Mbella Etouga, Imoro Ibrahim, Mudasiru Salifu, Razak Abalora even before the season ended.

The club were kicked out of the CAF Champions League preliminary stage against RC Kadiogo on penalties.

Hearts of Oak will face AS Bamako in the 1st leg of Confederations Cup qualifiers in Mali this weekend.
