We’ll protect every NDC member– Gbande warns ahead of Akwatia by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated its commitment to a peaceful by-election in Akwatia, vowing to take decisive action if any of its supporters face threats or violence.
Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, addressing supporters on the campaign trail on Wednesday, August 27, said the party will not tolerate any form of intimidation during the vote scheduled for September 2.
While emphasising the NDC’s peaceful posture, he warned that the party will respond firmly if provoked.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News later that day, Mr. Gbande clarified his earlier comments, stating:
“The conversation we are having was to the extent that at no point will the NDC encourage any of our supporters… violence will not be part of the election but just in case anybody foments violence, we will not watch for members to be victims.
“We will descend, protect any single member of the NDC that will participate in this election. We will protect the vote… that is what my statement means.”
His remarks align with those of NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who has also called for a fair, peaceful election.
The by-election in Akwatia, a critical swing seat is shaping up to be a fierce contest between the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu and the NDC’s Bernard Bediako.
In anticipation of tensions, the Ghana Police Service has deployed trained officers to ensure calm and maintain electoral integrity before, during, and after the vote.
