Security operatives in the Western North Region have arrested 88 individuals allegedly trained as "polling station security personnel" ahead of the upcoming elections.

The arrests, made during a covert operation, have raised concerns about the potential for voter intimidation and unlawful interference at polling centers.

According to authorities, the suspects were undergoing paramilitary-style training at an undisclosed location. Weapons, uniforms, and other materials reportedly intended for unauthorized use during the election were confiscated during the raid.

Police officials revealed that the group claimed they were being prepared to "ensure security" at polling stations. However, the Ghana Police Service emphasized that only accredited security personnel are permitted to handle security matters during elections.

Regional Commander ACP Samuel Anane stated, “The actions of this group violate electoral laws and pose a serious threat to the peace and credibility of the upcoming elections. Investigations are underway to determine who orchestrated this operation.”

This development has drawn widespread criticism, with many calling for severe penalties for those behind the scheme. Political parties and civil society groups have been urged to refrain from using unofficial forces, as such practices could undermine Ghana’s democratic integrity.

The arrests serve as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and the importance of upholding lawful and transparent electoral processes.

The Electoral Commission has reassured the public of its commitment to a free and fair election, calling on citizens to trust in the existing security framework.
