The Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan is surprised over recent comments by former President John Dramani Mahama in connection with the Electoral Commission's decision to compile a new voter's register.

"Being an election year, I will appeal to all political parties and other Civil Society Organisations to give the Electoral Commission the peace of mind to do its work. Our Constitution says that the Electoral Commission shall not be subjected to the direction of or control of any person and that includes me," John Mahama on 14th November 2016” the flagbearer of the NDC is reported to have said in 2016.

Fast-forward to 2020, the NDC has been criticizing the EC following its decision to compile a new voters’ register for the December elections. According to them, there is nothing wrong with the old register and that a new one will be a waste of time.

Meanwhile, the former President, while speaking recently to a delegation of fishermen said the EC “should tread cautiously. They shouldn’t do something that will bring confusion and chaos in this country. If they don’t want to listen to us and continue with the new registration then, whatever will happen, they have to bear the consequences.”

His comments have been denounced by sections of the public as unbecoming of a statesman and at variance to his (Mahama's) earlier position.

One such critic is Kwamena Duncan, who describes the former president's remarks as "shocking".

"You said the EC should be supported and allowed to discharge its duties and so why have you changed your mind and you are now beating war drum?…the EC is discharging its duties and those who don’t understand can go to the Supreme Court…we will assure the former President that if he thinks the country is going to turn upside down because of his presidency, it won’t happen!" he said on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo'
