A woman has been arrested and materials used to make explosives impounded in Mombasa.

Feruz Abubakar was arrested in Bondeni area on Monday, with detonators, explosive boosters, eight mobile phones and several sim cards.

The Anti-Terror Police Unit said she may have been planning to carry out a terror attack.

Officers said Abubakar was the wife of the main suspect behind the 2014 attack near Reef hotel in the county.

The attackers in the incident used samples of chemicals to trigger explosives through a remote-controlled device or a mobile phone signal.

Police said they will find out whether Abubakar intended to smuggle the explosives to Shimo la Tewa prison where the husband is being held.
