President John Dramani Mahama has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to approach their roles as a commitment to public service, not as personal rewards or political favours.
Speaking at an orientation and training programme for MMDCEs in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, President Mahama stressed that their appointments were made after rigorous consideration and should be treated with a sense of duty, humility, and accountability.
"This is not a personal reward; it is a public responsibility. You have been selected among many under section 21 of the Local Governance Act," he said.
The president explained the critical role of local governance in achieving national development, urging the appointees to align their actions with principles of transparency, inclusiveness, and sustainable growth.
"The Ghanaian people voted for a bold change and a reset; your actions and results must demonstrate that their trust was not misplaced," he added.
He also charged the MMDCEs with ensuring the judicious and transparent use of resources allocated to their jurisdictions, emphasising that local development depends on responsible leadership.
The orientation is part of a broader initiative to reorient local government leaders under the theme of national renewal and effective decentralisation which are key pillars of Mahama’s governance reset agenda.
