Morocco may have fallen short of lifting the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on home soil, but the Atlas Lions ended the 2025 tournament with a different kind of recognition, being named the Fair Play Team of the competition.

Despite the pain of defeat in a dramatic final against Senegal, Morocco were honoured for their exemplary sportsmanship, respect for opponents and officials, and commitment to clean, competitive football throughout the tournament.

The hosts were edged out 1–0 by the Teranga Lions in a tense final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, decided deep into extra time. Pape Gueye’s strike in the 94th minute sealed Senegal’s second AFCON title and shattered Moroccan hopes of ending a 50-year wait for continental glory.

Morocco last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1976, and Sunday’s loss extended that long drought, with their next chance to reclaim the trophy coming in 2027.

The final itself was a nervy and emotional affair. After 90 minutes of pulsating but goalless football, the match drifted into extra time following missed chances at both ends. Morocco were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead late in regulation time, but Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz failed to convert from the penalty spot, a moment that ultimately proved costly.

Senegal capitalised soon after, holding their nerve to see out the game and confirm their status as one of Africa’s modern football powerhouses. The victory marked their second AFCON triumph from four final appearances, having claimed their first title in 2021 with a penalty shootout win over Egypt.

For Morocco, the Fair Play award offered a measure of consolation after a painful night. While the trophy slipped away, their conduct across the tournament earned widespread respect and recognition, reinforcing the sense that the Atlas Lions, despite the setback, remain a force in African football, still chasing the title their nation has waited half a century to celebrate.
