2025 AFCON: Morocco will deliver worthy performance against Cameroon in the quarterfinals – Regragui
8th January 2026
Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has said his team is determined to produce a performance that reflects the country’s footballing identity as they prepare for a high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Cameroon.
The Atlas Lions edged past Tanzania in the last 16 to set up a daunting meeting with the Indomitable Lions, with the tie scheduled for Friday, 9 January 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
It is a clash loaded with history and expectation, with both sides chasing a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 tournament and eager to assert their credentials as continental heavyweights.
Speaking ahead of the match, Regragui stressed that Morocco’s ambition goes beyond simply winning.
“We hope to deliver a performance worthy of Moroccan football and secure qualification for the semi-finals because that is our goal,” he said.
The coach hinted at tactical flexibility, but insisted that belief and mental strength would be decisive on the night.
“There is more than one plan that can be played, but we always have the same way of thinking,” Regragui added. “The most important thing is to have confidence, and the mental factor will be of great importance.”
Cameroon, five-time AFCON champions, represent one of the toughest tests in African football, and Morocco know they will need discipline and composure to overcome them.
The reward for victory is another heavyweight encounter, with the winner set to face either Algeria or Nigeria in next Wednesday’s semi-final.
As anticipation builds, Regragui’s message is clear: Morocco are not just chasing a result, but a performance that lives up to the pride and expectations of their footballing tradition.
